because

because i love you
i eat apples instead of berries.

because i need you
i give our books away.

because i have you
i wake the neighbours weeping.

because i'm near you
i go to distant lands.

because i know you
i paint your face in colours.

because i touch you
i sing your body white.

because i want you
i serve food in clay dishes.

because i envy you
i watch the setting sun.

because i hold you
the night is never long.

earthbound

gravity loves the body
as flesh adores the earth.

if words were grapes,
pulp and juice, to suck and swallow,
i would pick them.
if language were hammock to lift and turn in
i'd lie in it awhile.
if paragraphs were boats for hovering over space,
i would ride always.

blood and bones cleave to matter.
arms want arms, not sentences,
hands need hands, not phrases to hold.
inside there is a hunger for food and drink and sleep;
movement is my story;
sleep my only poem.
